AUGUSTA — A Maine legislator whose e-mail account was hijacked in a phishing scheme is warning other computer users to be wary of similar scams.

Democratic Rep. Joan Welsh of Rockport says her e-mail account was hijacked after she responded to what she thought was a legitimate request for information from her account provider.

Scam artists then accessed Welsh’s account and sent e-mails to people in her contact file stating that Welsh was in England and needed money to get home after losing all her money and credit cards. Welsh received dozens of phone calls and e-mails from local residents concerned about the scam.

Welsh has warned Midcoast area residents to be on guard against similar scams and sent out e-mails correcting the record.
