ORONO – The University of Maine opened the second half with a 22-6 run and pulled away to a 66-53 victory over Albany in an America East men’s basketball game Wednesday night.

Murphy Burnatowski scored 20 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead the Black Bears (19-9, 11-4 America East), who held a 35-31 halftime lead against the Great Danes (7-23, 2-13).

Albany led by as many as 10 points early in the first half, and Maine did not take its first lead until there was 3:49 left in the first half.

Maine’s lone senior, Junior Bernal, added 10 points and six assists in the final home game of his career.

 

(3) PURDUE 59, MINNESOTA 58: Keaton Grant’s jumper with 7.7 seconds left lifted Purdue (24-3, 12-3 Big Ten) past Minnesota (16-11, 7-8) at Minneapolis after the Boilermakers lost Robbie Hummel to a knee injury in the first half.

(7) VILLANOVA 74, SOUTH FLORIDA 49: Scottie Reynolds scored 21 points and Antonio Pena had 14 to lead Villanova (23-4, 12-3 Big East) over visiting South Florida (16-11, 6-9).

Corey Stokes added 11 points to help the Wildcats snap their first two-game losing streak in two years. The Wildcats had sunk from No. 2 in the AP poll and from atop the conference standings after dropping games to Connecticut and Pittsburgh.

 

(9) OHIO STATE 75, PENN STATE 67: Evan Turner had 25 points and seven rebounds, David Lighty scored 18 and Ohio State (22-7, 12-4 Big Ten) nearly lost a 17-point lead before holding off Penn State (10-17, 2-13) at State College, Pa.

Turner overcame 1-for-7 shooting in the first half by going 7 of 10 in the second.

Lighty’s open 3 from the left wing put the Buckeyes up 49-32 with 13:50 left.

 

NOTRE DAME 68, (12) PITTSBURGH 53: Tim Abromaitis scored 17 points, Ben Hansbrough had 15 points and nine rebounds and Notre Dame (18-10, 7-8 Big East) made 10 3-pointers to beat visiting Pittsburgh (21-7, 10-5).

The Fighting Irish played a third straight game without Luke Harangody, the nation’s No. 2 scorer at 24.1 points a game, because of a bone bruise on his right knee.

 

(20) TEMPLE 49, DAYTON 41: Ramone Moore scored 13 points, Ryan Brooks added 11 and Temple (23-5, 11-2 Atlantic 10) held off Dayton (18-9, 7-6) at Philadelphia.

(21) TEXAS 69, OKLAHOMA STATE 59: Dexter Pittman had 16 points and eight rebounds, leading Texas (22-6 8-5 Big 12) over visiting Oklahoma State (19-8, 7-6).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

(1) UCONN 87, SYRACUSE 66: Maya Moore had a season-high 38 points and a career-high 20 rebounds to help visiting Connecticut (28-0, 14-0 Big East) beat Syracuse (19-8, 6-8) for its 67th straight victory.

Tiffany Hayes added 22 points for the Huskies, who have beaten Syracuse 18 straight times.

(3) NEBRASKA 80, (11) OKLAHOMA 64: Kelsey Griffin had 30 points and 13 rebounds and Nebraska (26-0, 13-0 Big 12) clinched its first Big 12 title by pulling away from Oklahoma (19-8, 9-4) at Norman, Okla.

 

(5) XAVIER 81, CHARLOTTE 61: Amber Harris scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half to help Xavier (23-3, 13-0 Atlantic 10) rally over Charlotte (15-12, 8-5) at Cincinnati.

 

(23) OKLAHOMA STATE 73, (14) TEXAS 72: Andrea Riley scored the final 17 points for Oklahoma State (19-8, 7-6 Big 12) in regulation, and Megan Byford’s free throw in overtime helped the Cowboys beat visiting Texas (19-8, 8-5).

(18) ST. JOHN’S 60, RUTGERS 52: Kelly McManmon hit consecutive 3-pointers to ignite a late spurt, and St. John’s (22-5, 10-4 Big East) snapped a 17-game losing streak against Rutgers (15-13, 7-7) with a victory at Piscataway, N.J.

 

(24) HARTFORD 63, ALBANY 57: Diana Delva scored 22 points to help visiting Hartford (24-3, 15-0 America East) beat Albany (10-18, 3-12) and clinch the America East regular-season title.
