YARMOUTH — Thomas M. “Tom” Wood, 83, died March 11 surrounded by his family after a brief illness. 

He was born on Oct. 9, 1926, on Long Island, the son of Lida and Thomas F. Wood and attended the island school before graduating from Portland High School in 1944.

Following his graduation, he entered the Army Air Forces, serving in Germany. 

After his service in the Army, he attended the University of Maine in Orono where he studied civil engineering.  He worked in engineering and as a contractor with Portland area home builders before starting his own home building company.

In 1947 he married Barbara Gerrity from Long Island and moved to Yarmouth.

His family and friends will remember his strong work ethic, his love for the arts and his many charitable donations.

He enjoyed cruising around Casco Bay on his boats, visiting art museums and the Boothbay Botanical Garden and had a keen interest in war history.

He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald Wood of Long Island.

Surviving are his wife Barbara; his three children, Sandra Wilson and her husband Mark of Yarmouth, Karen Clifford and son-in-law, Harry Clifford of Wisconsin, and Thomas E. Wood of Cumberland; his brother Olan Wood and his wife Gail of Long Island, and his sister Beverly Jones and her husband Lloyd of Long Island; four grandchildren, Aaron S. Wilson and his wife Nichole of North Yarmouth, Brett Thomas Wilson of Portland, Joshua Thomas Clifford and Elizabeth Clifford of Wisconsin; his three year- old great-grandson, Carter Thomas Wilson, who called him “big gramps.”

A private memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 20.

Arrangements are by Lindquist Funeral Home, 1 Mayberry Lane, Yarmouth.
