BANGOR—A perfect season ended with one final dreamy accolade for Scarborough senior basketball standout Christy Manning.

Friday night, at the Maine McDonald’s state basketball banquet at Husson University, Manning was named the winner of the 2009-10 Miss Maine Basketball award, the first Scarborough player to earn the honor.

Manning led the Red Storm to a perfect season and first-ever regional and state championships last month.

Deering’s Claire Ramonas and Waterville’s Jen Nale were the other finalists.

“I was really surprised,” Manning said. “I know Claire and Jen are really great players. No matter who won, I would have been happy to just be a finalist.”

Manning, a four-year varsity player for Scarborough, averaged 15 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists this winter, leading the Red Storm to a 22-0 record. Manning is the daughter of Ed Manning and Lisa Blais Manning, the former Westbrook and Old Dominion standout.

“This is real important because basketball’s a big thing in my life,” Manning said. “Our team’s had a really great year. To end with this is awesome. My whole team is excited. This is awesome.”

Scarborough coach Jim Seavey praised Manning’s selflessness.

“She’s the consummate teammate,” Seavey said. “She does whatever it takes to make the team successful. She has no selfishness in her body. She epitomizes what we’ve done over the past four years. What a great way to cap a great career.”

Manning plans to attend Holy Cross on a track scholarship. She holds school records in the shot put, discus and javelin.
