A woman was taken by helicopter from a serious head-on crash in Alfred this morning.

The woman was driving west one Route 202 and was cresting Shaker Hill when she collided with another car, which a man was driving east, according to York County Sheriff Maurice Ouellette.

The eastbound car had crossed the center line at the crest of hill and was in the oncoming lane, Ouellette said.

Firefighters had to use an extrication tool to remove the woman from her car.

The man was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

A small dog that had been in one of the cars died.

Ouellette, who was on his way to work on Route 202 around 8 a.m., was among the first on the scene of the crash. He said he helped get the male driver out of his wrecked car and consoled the female driver until rescue workers arrived to remove her from the vehicle.
