A Gray man was hospitalized in critical condition late Sunday after being involved in what police are describing as a possible drag-racing incident in the town of Raymond.
Capt. Jeff Davis of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said witnesses told investigators that a Volkswagen operated by 23-year-old Nicholas R. Leone left Raymond Hill Road, struck a culvert and was catapulted through the air before landing on a stone wall.
The operator of the second vehicle fled the scene.
Davis said Leone was taken to Maine Medical Center and was listed in critical condition.
Police said speed and alcohol may have contributed to the crash, which occurred around 8:30 p.m.
