Fitzpatrick leads Norwich to NCAA title game

Former Cheverus player Mollie Fitzpatrick (a sophomore) and the Norwich women’s hockey team reached the NCAA Division III national championship game last weekend before losing, 7-2, to Amherst. The Cadets beat Plattsburgh State, 3-2, in the quarterfinals, then edged Elmira, 3-2, in the semifinals.

Cheverus inducts new Hall of Fame members

Cheverus will induct five new members into its Athletic Hall of Fame on March 28. The group includes John P. Cimino, Class of 1961, a basketball standout and a member of the school’s 1961 state championship team; Santo A. Cimino, 1962, who earned three varsity letters in basketball; Phillip “Jack” Dawson, 1952, a football, basketball and track standout who is now a member of the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame and the man behind the Cheverus summer sports program; Peter J. Foley, 1963, a state record-setting swimmer; and Ronald L. Lemieux, 1973, a football, basketball and baseball star. Waynflete lacrosse clinic upcoming

Longtime Waynflete varsity lacrosse coaches Cathie Connors and Bob Johnson will conduct clinics for boys and girls in grades 3-6 during the month of May. The clinics will emphasize fundamentals and prepare young athletes for competitive play. The first clinic is May 1 from 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the Fore River Fields. SMCC hires new assistant baseball coach

Southern Maine Community College has hired Jacob Kleckner as its new assistant baseball coach. Kleckner replaces Andy Wood, who is now coaching at St. Joseph’s College.

SMCC names Athletes of the Month

The SMCC Liberty Mutual Athletes of the Month are Coleman Findlay and Alisa Sweet. Findlay is a junior center for the men’s basketball team, a captain and a criminal justice major. He averaged 16.8 points and 8.2 rebounds in February. Sweet, a freshman small forward majoring in liberal studies, averaged 14.3 points and 10.2 rebounds per game in February, helping the Seawolves win the Yankee Small College Conference crown.
