BAR HARBOR — The head of The Jackson Laboratory biomedical research facility in Bar Harbor, Maine, says he is stepping down.

Richard Woychik has been president and CEO since 2002. He says he has achieved his goals of stabilizing the lab’s finances and expanding its areas of scientific research, and that it’s time for new leadership.

He says he will stay on while the board of trustees conducts a search for his successor.

The Jackson Laboratory, which specializes in mouse genetics to prevent and treat human diseases, has more than 1,300 employees.
