AUGUSTA — Gov. John Baldacci has signed a budget-balancing bill which he says demonstrates that Maine’s Legislature can rise above partisanship and make tough decisions.
Baldacci was surrounded by legislative leaders from both parties as he signed the bill today that closes a $310 million gap. The bill received overwhelming votes of approval in the House and Senate on Tuesday.
Baldacci said that “while much of the country is torn apart by heated political rhetoric, in Maine things are different.”
The governor said that with enactment of the budget, state government will be smaller, structural changes will reduce the cost of government going forward, and state reserves will be replenished.
Human services and education programs are among the hardest-hit by budget cuts.
