AUGUSTA — Advocates for Maine public campaign financing say four candidates for governor – three Democrats and one Republican – will qualify Clean Election funds.

The Maine Citizens for Clean Elections also say none of the independent candidates is anywhere near qualifying by Thursday afternoon’s deadline.

Democrats Pat McGowan and Libby Mitchell say they’ve already met the threshold, and the Clean Election advocates say John Richardson is expected to qualify. State campaign regulators say Republican Peter Mills was certified last week.

All of the other Republicans in the June 8 primary race are seeking private funding as are Democrats Steve Rowe and Rosa Scarcelli.
