SOUTH PORTLAND — A South Portland home sustained heavy damage tonight from a fire that officials said started in the attic.
Deputy Chief Stephen Fox said the fire at 221 Evans Street broke out just after 7 p.m. in the home’s attic area. It spread to the second floor before being brought under control. The first floor received extensive water damage.
No one was at home when the fire broke out, but a dog and a cat did have to be rescued by firefighters. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fox said the home is located near South Portland High School.
