Bowdoin women pound Southern Maine in lacrosse

Elizabeth Clegg, Caroline McNamara and Chelsea Albright each scored three times Wednesday to pace Bowdoin in a 21-6 women’s lacrosse victory over the University of Southern Maine at Portland.

Katie Herter, Katie Stewart and Carolyn Gorajek added two goals apiece for the Polar Bears (4-3), who led 12-1 at halftime.

Mary Vaughan had three goals for the Huskies (3-3).

n Lara Kozin had four goals and two assists for Tufts, which took an 11-4 halftime lead and held off Bates for a 17-14 victory at Medford, Mass.

Joan O’Neill had five goals and two assists for the Bobcats.

MEN’S LACROSSE: Kit Smith scored three goals and Steve Thomas added two to help Bowdoin to a 9-7 victory over Springfield at Exeter, N.H.

The Polar Bears (3-4) led 7-2 over the Pride (2-4) at the half.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Steve Lavin says an NCAA tournament berth is a realistic goal in his first season coaching at St. John’s. The former UCLA coach was formally introduced in his new job in New York.

Louisville and Coach Rick Pitino have agreed in principle to a four-year contract extension that will keep Pitino with the Cardinals through 2017.

Seton Hall introduced Kevin Willard as the Pirates’ new coach.

PREP SCHOOLS

BOYS’ LACROSSE: Cooper Quenneville scored four goals to lead Gould Academy (1-1) to an 8-5 win over Berwick Academy (0-1) at Deering High School in Portland.

Doug Gardner added two goals for Gould.

FOOTBALL

NFL: The New England Patriots will open their 2010 exhibition schedule against the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints.

The preseason game will be played Aug. 12 at Gillette Stadium.

New England travels to Atlanta on Aug. 19 for a nationally televised game against the Falcons.

The Patriots’ final two preseason games will be against the St. Louis Rams at home on Aug. 26, and against the New York Giants at their new stadium in the Meadowlands. The date for that game has not yet been finalized.

Jason Elam, 40, spent the last two years of a 17-year NFL career with the Atlanta Falcons. But he retired as a Denver Bronco.

Nearly four months after being waived by the Falcons, Elam signed a one-day contract with Denver and retired.

Kern County prosecutors say no charges will be filed against Arizona Cardinals linebacker Joey Porter in connection with his recent arrest on suspicion of DUI and resisting arrest.
