BOWDOINHAM — A collision between a moose and a motor vehicle on I-295 in Bowdoinham on Saturday led to another accident, leaving one person dead and one critically injured, Maine State Police said.

Two other people were also injured, police said.

The accident occurred around 8 p.m. in a southbound lane near the Bowdoinham/Topsham town line. Police shut down the highway for several hours and vehicles were detoured onto Route 201.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said moose present a danger throughout the state’s highway system.

“They are everywhere and particularly at night invisible despite their size,” McCausland said.
