AUGUSTA — Maine lawmakers have decided to let voters decide whether to allow a casino in Oxford County.
The Senate voted Monday to go along with the House and kill the bill. Because the proposal is a citizen initiative, the Legislature’s action sends the proposal to referendum in the fall.
The Legislature considered sending competing questions to voters that would have sought to permit expanded gaming in Calais and Bangor, but those proposals were rejected.
Black Bear Entertainment LLC, which wants to develop a four-season casino-resort in Oxford, says the resort would create 1,000 jobs with benefits and pump millions of dollars into the state’s education budget.
