Deering students collect
donations for Ecuador trip

PORTLAND — Students in the Spanish Club at Deering High School are collecting donations for a nine-day community service trip to Las Tolas, Ecuador.

The students are seeking garden hoses, sprinklers and mesh garden netting for a reforestation project they will be working on in rural Ecuador. Additionally, the students also are seeking a digital camera and a pair of good quality binoculars to donate to the local community.

Along with participating in a reforestation project, the students will also spend time volunteering at a local school, an organic coffee farm and a dairy farm.

Reiche annual potluck
and auction upcoming

PORTLAND — The Reiche Elementary School’s annual multicultural potluck and spring auction will be held on Thursday, April 15.

The event is hosted by the Reiche PTO and will begin at 6 p.m. at the Reiche Elementary School, located at 166 Brackett St., Portland.

All proceeds of the event will benefit the school-wide arts enrichment program, ACToR – Arts Come to Reiche.

Lincoln Middle launches
lunchroom recycling

PORTLAND —  Lincoln Middle School has recently launched a new cafeteria recycling program designed by to reduce lunchroom waste. 

The pilot program was designed by students and made possible through a partnership between the school district, a Waterville-based business, Huhtamaki Packaging, and a local nonprofit, KIDS Consortium.

A key component of the program is replacing the Styrofoam cafeteria trays with recyclable ones. Huhtamaki Packaging donated several thousand trays made from 100 percent recycled paper fibers.

The students also created a separation system for recycling leftover milk, milk cartons, the new lunch trays and other items. KIDS Consortium provided a $750 Green School mini- grant to help pay for the recycling containers, and other equipment, videotape to document the project, and for educational field trips.

Cook earns Rotary Club
Youth Service Award

PORTLAND — The Portland Rotary Club presented Cheverus High School senior, Elizabeth Cook of Scarborough, with its annual Youth Service Award. 

Cook, the daughter of Mary and William Cook of Scarborough, is involved in many service activities, including volunteering at Mercy Hospital, and serves on the school’s Student Council, Peer Helper, Spanish Club secretary,  Math Team, and performs with the Cheverus Jazz Choir.

Cheverus High School recently received its second largest gift in the school’s history from the estate of Leonard F. Ahern. Ahern, a 1940 graduate of Cheverus High School, bequeathed a $1,000,000 restricted endowment gift to Cheverus. The gift will result in an annual college scholarship award of $40,000 to one graduating Cheverus senior. The first recipient of the Ahern Scholarship is Thomas K. Yates of West Baldwin, who plans to attend Stonehill or Bentley Colleges and major business. Yates is active in school and community organizations, including serving as an Eagle Scout, senior class officer and co-president of Student Council,  a regular volunteer at a local soup kitchen, trumpeter in the Jazz Band, a member of the school’s soccer, indoor and outdoor track teams. Additionally, he is the founder and treasurer of the Cheverus International Club, co-president of the school’s executive board, among many other accomplishments.
