YARMOUTH — The Yarmouth Wellness Fair has grown so much over the past five years that April 10 has been declared Maine Wellness Day.

Gov. John Baldacci signed a proclamation in March naming April 10 as Maine Wellness Day, a day to be aware of and create wellness awareness throughout the state.

The proclamation states that since the inception of the Yarmouth Wellness Fair, interest in alternative forms of heath care has grown. The Yarmouth vendors have helped other communities organize their own fairs, and people have had the opportunity to learn more about their wellness options.

This year’s fair will be held Saturday, April 10, at the Rowe School, 52 School St., from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

More than 40 local alternative health-care providers will attend the event, hosted by the Yarmouth Chamber of Commerce and Community Services. Admission is free and will provide visitors the opportunity to learn about alternative and holistic forms of health care, including acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage therapy and energy therapies.

Some of the exhibitors will give demonstrations, sessions and lectures throughout the day, and will educate the public about the benefits of Reiki, Rolfing, polarity and massage. There will be opportunities to ask business owners about holistic medicine and alternative practices, and there will be a shoebox raffle with proceeds to benefit the Yarmouth Food Pantry.

New this year is a bicycle safety clinic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Adults and children are  encouraged to in bring bikes and helmets to be checked for basic safety and maintenance tips.
