Roberts, Wells fare well at short course nationals

Jenni Roberts of Sanford and James Wells of Phippsburg each placed sixth in the 200-yard backstroke at the YMCA short course national championships in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Roberts finished with a time of 2 minutes, 0.44 seconds in a race won by Annie Gillig, 15, of South Carolina in 1:56.75.

Wells, a senior at Morse High, swam faster in the morning’s preliminaries (1:48.99) than he did in the evening finals (1:49.43), won by Steven Zimmerman of Ohio in 1:44.79.

Roberts won the 100 butterfly on Thursday with a time of 54.23 seconds. In the men’s 100 butterfly, Won Ho Chang of Hyde School placed ninth and Wells 14th.

In the 100 backstroke on Wednesday, Roberts placed fourth in 54.70 and Wells was second in 47.98.

DRAG RACING

CAR SHOW: Oxford Dragway is hosting a car show at the Maine Mall today and Sunday.

There will be more than 20 cars, from Top Dragsters to a Funny Car, and all classes of snowmobiles, drag bikes and junior dragsters.

The cost is $10 for anyone over 17, $5 for ages 12-17 and free for 12-and-under.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE: Ashley Gray scored four goals and Lee Tsairis added three goals and two assists for Berwick Academy (3-0) in a 14-6 win over Hyde (1-2) at South Berwick.

Jacqui Zannos also scored three goals, and Lyndsay Brattan had two goals and an assist.
