WATERVILLE — The University of Southern Maine scored five times in the ninth inning to rally to an 11-7 victory over Colby in a college baseball game Wednesday at Coombs Field.

Nick Grady had a two-run double and Mike Eaton added a two-run single to spark the winning rally.

The Mules (9-9) broke a 5-5 tie in the sixth on Richard Newton’s two-run homer. USM (12-9) got a run in the eighth to close to 7-6.

SOFTBALL

ST. JOSEPH’S SWEEPS LASELL: Emily Leverone had three home runs and went 6 for 8 with five runs and eight RBI as the Monks (27-5, 20-0 GNAC) posted 10-6 and 12-2 wins against Lasell (16-18-1, 12-8) at Newton, Mass.

Alyssa Dunn had a grand slam as St. Joseph’s took a 7-0 lead in the first inning of the opener. Liddy van der Linden homered in the second game.

BOWDOIN SWEEPS USM: Amy Hackett had a two-run single and Molly Nestor a two-run double as the Polar Bears (20-9) scored five times in the sixth inning for a 9-5 win over the Huskies (5-21) in the opener at Brunswick.

Shavonne Lord singled home two runs in a four-run third inning as Bowdoin won the second game, 6-4.

Heather Gilman homered and Sarah Deroche had three hits for USM in Game 1. Kara Davis had two hits and an RBI in Game 2.

MEN’S LACROSSE

UNE 24, REGIS 2: Derek Arnold scored five goals and Luke DiFiore had four goals and an assist as UNE (5-8, 2-6 Commonwealth Coast) routed the Pride (0-7, 0-5) at Weston, Mass. 

COLBY 13, USM 7: Whit McCarthy scored two of his four goals during the first quarter as Colby (7-4) opened a 4-0 lead and beat the Huskies (2-7) at Gorham.

Tim Bryant had three goals for USM.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

BUTLER: Forward Gordon Hayward will enter the NBA draft but not sign with an agent, allowing him to return to school if he withdraws his name by May 8.

PURDUE: Center JaJuan Johnson and guard E’Twaun Moore will enter the NBA draft but are not hiring agents. 

WRIGHT STATE: Longtime assistant Billy Donlon was promoted to head coach one day after Brad Brownell left to become coach at Clemson.
