AUGUSTA — Maine Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman says the state’s unemployment rate during March was 8.2 percent, a slight drop from February’s 8.3 percent figure.

Fortman says the number of unemployed people in Maine totaled 58,000, up 1,800 from a year earlier. At the same time, March marked the first time Maine’s had three consecutive months of job gains since the middle of 2007.

Other New England states’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rates in March were 7 percent in New Hampshire, 6.5 percent in Vermont, 9.3 percent in Massachusetts, 12.6 percent in Rhode Island and 9.2 percent in Connecticut. The New England average was 9.1 percent.

The national unemployment rate for March was 9.7 percent.
