ORONO — Police today charged a man with drunken-driving and manslaughter in the hit-and-run death of a University of Maine student in January.

Police said Garrett Cheney, 22, of South Berwick, is responsible for the death of 20-year-old Jordyn Bakley, of Camden, whose body was found on Middle Street in Orono near the apartment she shared with other students. He left the scene and crashed his truck about a half-hour later, police said.

Bakley was a junior who was studying elementary education.

Cheney surrendered to police early today and was taken to Penobscot County Jail in Bangor, where bail was set at $20,000 cash. He was due in court May 20 to face charges of manslaughter, aggravated criminal operating under the influence of intoxicants, leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in serious bodily injury and criminal operating under the influence of intoxicants.

Cheney had been in Orono on Jan. 29 to visit a cousin who was celebrating his 21st birthday, according to a police affidavit. Witnesses later said Cheney had been drinking at a Middle Street residence and at local bars that night.

Cheney’s vehicle, a 2003 Chevy Silverado, struck Bakley around 3 a.m., but he drove on and headed south on Interstate 95, police said. His truck went off the highway about 3:30 a.m. Jan. 30 in Etna. The affidavit says his blood alcohol level was .15 percent, nearly twice the legal limit.

Bakley’s body was discovered by a newspaper carrier about an hour before sunrise Jan. 30.

Orono and state police were able to connect the vehicle in the I-95 accident to the vehicle that was involved in the Orono death, Penobscot County District Attorney Christopher Almy said.
