St. Joseph’s uses seven-run first inning to outslug Southern Maine in baseball

Craig Woodbury went 2 for 4 with a home run for St. Joseph’s College on Wednesday in an 11-8 baseball victory over Southern Maine at Standish.

St. Joseph’s (24-10) had the bats going early, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a six-run lead. Woodbury and Travis Adams both homered in the inning.

USM (14-12) cut the lead to 9-7 in the top of the sixth but could get no closer, and the Monks tacked on two more runs.

Ben Grant-Roy was 2 for 5, including a home run in the eighth for the Monks.

Noah Lynd had a two-run homer in the first game, and Jake Simon had a triple and two RBI in the second game as Bates (16-8) swept a doubleheader, 24-1 and 6-3, at UMaine-Presque Isle (2-24).

Chris Maguire had three hits for Husson (19-15) in a 6-2 win over Bowdoin (10-8) in Brunswick.

Winning pitcher Ryan Arsenault scattered 10 hits, allowing two runs while striking out 11.

MEN’S LACROSSE: Spencer Hunt scored nine goals and added assist to lead St. Joseph’s (7-6) to a 20-1 win over the UMaine-Farmington (1-8) in Standish.

Paul Dolewa added four goals and two assists, while Dylan Chase had a goal and eight assists.

Adam Tracy had four goals and an assist to lead Bowdoin (7-5) to a 6-5 win over visiting Bates (4-7).

SOFTBALL: Lauren Becker earned both wins while leading Colby (8-16) to a doubleheader sweep, 5-3 and 9-5, against Southern Maine (8-24) in Gorham.

In the opener, Becker pitched 52⁄3 innings, allowing three runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out five.
Colby took advantage of three errors in the second game to score seven runs on five hits in the seventh inning.

Kim Hunt struck out 11 of the 17 batters she faced for Southern Maine Community College (14-7) in a 20-0 win at home over Central Maine Community College (2-2).

PREP SCHOOLS

BASEBALL: Alex Tobey struck out 11 batters over six innings for Berwick Academy (4-0) in a 13-3 win over Lexington Christian Academy (1-3) in Lexington, Mass.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE: Brit Mscisz finished with five goals and an assist to lead Pingree (3-3) to a 16-7 win over Berwick Academy (4-2) at South Berwick.

Ashley Gray led Berwick with three goals and an assist. Abby Martinen finished with 15 saves.

SOFTBALL: Catie Wheeler pitched five innings of relief for Berwick Academy (3-0) in a 2-0 win at Beaver Country Day School (0-4) in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
