The state medical examiner has confirmed that the death of a father and his autistic son in Gray Tuesday was a murder-suicide.

Authorities say Daniel McLatchie, 44, shot his 22-year-old son Benjamin in the head with a shotgun then turned the gun on himself. The shooting occurred at 227 Yarmouth Road, also called Route 115, at about 2:30 p.m.

Cumberland County Sheriff’s deputies received a 911 call just before the shooting instructing them to come to the house. Police believe the father placed that call.

McLatchie left two notes, police said. One of them indicated that he was fearful about who would care for his disabled son if he, the father, died. The father was the young man’s full-time caregiver. The other included financial information for his wife, who was at work at the time at a school for disabled children.
