USM edges Western Connecticut to advance in Little East women’s lacrosse tournament

Jess Knight had eight goals and an assist to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 17-16 victory over Western Connecticut State in the first round of the Little East Conference women’s lacrosse tournament Tuesday at Danbury, Conn.

Shelby Turcotte added six goals for the fifth-seeded Huskies (9-9). Her final goal gave USM a 17-15 lead.

Jessica Bouwman had five goals for the fourth-seeded Colonials.

BASEBALL: Anthony Pisani hit a two-run single with two outs in the ninth inning to lift USM (18-17-1) to a 4-3 victory over Bowdoin (23-13) at Brunswick.

Bowdoin took a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning on back-to-back doubles by Nick Tom and Brendan Garner.

Noah Burke had five hits with four runs scored and three RBI to lead Bates (25-10) to a 17-6 win over Fisher (25-23) in the first game of a doubleheader at Lewiston.

Chris Burke had three hits and three RBI as the Bobcats won the second game, 18-7. Noah Lynd homered in each game for Bates.

SOFTBALL: Bates (7-25) finished its season with two five-inning victories over Fisher (17-26) at Lewiston, winning the opener 11-1 and the second game, 9-1.

Kristen Finn pitched a no-hitter with eight strikeouts in the first game, and Caroline Gattuso followed with a five-hitter while striking out 10.

BOXING

PORTLAND BOXING CLUB: Light welterweight Casey Kramlich lost a unanimous decision to Mohamed Adam of Detroit in his opening bout at the Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions in Little Rock, Ark.
