The first full week of spring sports action was memorable for many reasons. Here’s why:

The Brunswick baseball team has had the most success out of local teams this spring. The Dragons are now 3-3 on the year after wins last week over Morse, 8-7, and Mt. Ararat, 2-1, and a 4-1 loss at undefeated Oxford Hills Monday. Brunswick (sixth in the Eastern A Heal Points standings as of Tuesday) goes to Brewer Friday and plays host to Hampden Monday.

Mt. Ararat is now 2-4 on the year and is on a three-game skid after recent losses to Brunswick (2-1), Lewiston (11-1) and Oxford Hills (10-0). The Eagles (12th in Eastern A) are at Skowhegan Friday and play at Erskine Monday.

Morse is still seeking its first victory in 2010. The Shipbuilders fell in recent action at Brunswick (8-7), at home against Oxford Hills (12-2) and at Edward Little (12-2). Morse (14th in the region) hosted Lewiston Tuesday, plays at Messalonskee Friday and welcomes Bangor Monday.

On the softball side of the diamond, Mt. Ararat took a 3-2 record into Tuesday’s home game against Oxford Hills. The Eagles were 4-3 home losers to Edward Little last Wednesday, but bounced back with a 6-0 victory at Brunswick and a 7-5 triumph at Lewiston. Mt. Ararat (seventh in the Eastern A Heals as of Tuesday) visits Skowhegan Friday and plays at Erskine Monday.

Brunswick is now 1-5. The Dragons got in the win column last week, 13-2 at Lewiston, but lost subsequent games to Morse (20-5), Mt. Ararat (6-0) and Oxford Hills (7-0). Brunswick (14th in Eastern A) is at Brewer Friday and home with Hampden Monday.

Morse is 1-4 on the year after a 20-5 win at Brunswick and losses to Oxford Hills (22-5) and Edward Little (9-0) in recent action. The Shipbuilders (12th in Eastern A) hosted Lewiston Tuesday, play at Messalonskee Friday and welcome Bangor Monday.

Boys’ lacrosse

Defending Eastern A boys’ lacrosse champion Brunswick is up to its old tricks. The Dragons improved to 2-0 on the year with an easy 14-1 home win over Cony Friday. Brunswick (sixth in the Eastern A Heals as of Tuesday and fifth in the latest coaches’ poll) was at Edward Little Tuesday, has a showdown at two-time defending Class B champion Yarmouth Saturday and plays at Mt. Blue Tuesday.

Mt. Ararat, which dropped its first two games, evened its record at 2-2 with recent wins over Mt. Blue (13-1) and Edward Little (11-9). In the latter game, Dylan Bousquet-Smith erupted for seven goals. The Eagles (third in Eastern A) then improved to 3-2 Tuesday with a 17-3 win over Oxford Hills (Bousquet-Smith scored eight times). Mt. Ararat plays at Noble Saturday and Messalonskee Tuesday.

In Eastern B, Morse is riding high at 4-1 after winning three in a row, 20-4 over visiting Oak Hill, 10-7 at Gardiner and 9-5 at Mountain Valley. The Shipbuilders (third in the Heals) host Massabesic Saturday and welcome Lincoln Academy Tuesday.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, two-time defending Class A champion Brunswick continues to decimate all comers, but is about to get a stern test. The Dragons improved to 4-0 with recent romps over Messalonskee (13-1) and Morse (18-3), but Saturday, Brunswick has to go to Eastern B powerhouse North Yarmouth Academy. Wednesday of next week, the Dragons (first in the Eastern A Heals as of Tuesday) go to Mt. Ararat.

Speaking of the Eagles, they’re second in Eastern A with a 3-1 mark. Last Thursday, Mt. Ararat lost, 10-8, at Cony, but Monday, the Eagles responded and won, 14-1, at home over Edward Little. Mt. Ararat is home against Westbrook Saturday and Brunswick Wednesday.

In Eastern B, Morse is 2-1 after Monday’s 16-3 loss to Brunswick. The Shipbuilders (eighth in the latest Heals) is home with Thornton Academy Saturday and Lincoln Academy Wednesday.

Brunswick hosted Cony, Morse and Waterville in a boys’ and girls’ outdoor track meet last Thursday. The Dragons won the boys’ meet, while the girls’ came in second. The Shipbuilders were fourth in both races. Mt. Ararat competed at Leavitt (along with Lewiston and Oxford Hills). The Eagles won the girls’ meet and were second on the boys’ side.

Brunswick’s boys’ tennis team is 2-1 so far, having beaten Mt. Blue and Erskine in recent matches. The Dragons girls are also 2-1.

Morse’s boys lost recent matches to Lincoln and Maranacook. The Shipbuilders girls fell to 1-3 after losses to the same foes.

Mt. Ararat is 2-2 on the boys’ side after losing 5-0 at Lewiston Monday. The girls are also 2-2 to date.
