LEWISTON — Last year’s hot sales of wood pellets are cooling off in Maine.
Sunday’s Sun Journal of Lewiston says last year’s boom of companies across the state that delivered pellets, installed boilers and created new technologies to take advantage of the wood-pellet boom is over.
Those companies are now struggling to keep business up after a winter of relatively low oil prices, high temperatures and cash-strapped consumers who didn’t have the money to spend on new heating systems.
Last year, Corinth Wood Pellets was running 24-7 to produce enough pellets to keep up with demand. This year, it’s running half of that.
However, people in Maine’s pellet industry say a single slow season doesn’t mark pellets’ demise, and they’re optimistic about the future.
