AUBURN — A police affidavit says a 45-year-old Maine man confessed to police that he fatally shot his wife because he thought she was having an affair.

Brian Nichols of Turner is charged with murder in the death of 38-year-old Jane Tetreault early Saturday morning. He made his first appearance today in Androscoggin County Superior Court.

According to the Sun Journal newspaper, court documents say one of Nichols’ teenage sons told detectives that his father had recently been stalking his mother because he thought she was having an affair.

A judge today ordered Nichols to undergo a mental examination.
