FALMOUTH — James “Jim” Daniels, 59, died peacefully May 7 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough after a 15-month battle with brain cancer.

He was born in New York City on Jan. 3, 1951, to James and Catherine (Campion) Daniels and grew up in Scarsdale, N.Y.

After he attended Thomas Moore School in Peterborough, N.H., he earned a bachelor’s degree in English from St. Louis University, in St. Louis, Mo.

On Aug. 25, 1984, he married Mary Lello at the Lello home in Scarborough.

For over 30 years he worked as an international photojournalist. While most of his career was spent as a freelance commercial and magazine photographer, he also had worked as a staff photographer for the Portland Press Herald and the Providence Journal.

He traveled the globe in search of compelling stories and images. A joyful, compassionate man who easily earned people’s trust, he was able to capture the true spirit of everyday people all over the world.

Most recently, his photography was exhibited at a public reception held at the Northeast Hearing and Speech building in Portland, where he had received speech therapy.

Surviving are his wife of 31 years, Mary; his sisters, Stacie Daniels of Oakland, Calif., and Donna and husband Mark Gray, of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; sisters-in-law Jayne Lello and husband David Mallett of Dover-Foxcroft, Karmo and Jerry Sanders of Scarborough, and Sara and husband Shep Shepherd of Orono; brother-in-law Joel Lello of Scarborough; mother-in-law Mary Lello of Scarborough; nieces and nephews Will, Luke and Molly Mallet, Jenny-Wren and husband Jay Walker, Hannah Sanders and Eric Whitton, and Sam and Joe Shepherd; two grandnieces, Linnea and Astrid Whitton; and many loving friends who were like extended family.
