AUGUSTA — Gov. John Baldacci says a newly passed law can help Maine senior citizens who are being forced from their homes by high property taxes.
Baldacci and sponsors of legislation authorizing tax deferrals gathered in the governor’s office today to mark the law’s enactment during the past session.
It allows towns and cities to establish property tax deferral programs for Mainers who are at least 70, have lived in their homes for at least 10 years and meet other eligibility standards.
Sponsors say there’s a lot of interest in the idea among seniors, some of whom have tearfully told them they were being taxed out of their homes. The new law allows property taxes to be deferred until the death of the homeowner or sale of the home.
