LEWISTON — Maine Democratic Party activists are gathering in Lewiston for their two-day convention.

The convention’s formal opening will be this evening, when U.S. Reps. Chellie Pingree and Mike Michaud will address the delegates.

A high point of the convention will be Saturday afternoon, when the party’s four gubernatorial contestants — Pat McGowan, Libby Mitchell, Steve Rowe and Rosa Scarcelli — are scheduled to speak.

Saturday night’s keynote speaker will be Democratic National Committee Chairman Tim Kaine, the former governor of Virginia.

Maine’s Democrats convene amid tea party gains in other states and a high level of anger against Washington. Maine tea party leaders say the message of limited government and lower taxes is not just aimed at Republicans.
