Congress Street got a little jazzed up Friday.

Workers installed a new marquee at Port City Music Hall, a popular nightclub and concert venue near Monument Square. The art deco marquee, which has a musical theme, includes lighting and an electronic message board to advertise events. The new look raises the profile of the hall, and it’s part of a larger effort to beautify the Congress Street Arts District.

Portland is using federal grant money to help businesses improve old storefronts and facades, and pitched in $18,000 toward the $67,000 marquee. More facade improvements are on the way, at the Public Market House in Monument Square and other nearby commercial buildings on Congress Street, according to the city.
