Cape Elizabeth’s Homa honored as top scholar-athlete

Cape Elizabeth’s Stephen D. Homa was one of 17 recipients of the State of Maine Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Inc.’s, 23rd annual Scholar-Athlete awards earlier this week. Homa boasts a 93.7 GPA, is a Math Club member, was a two-year starter at linebacker and tight end for the Capers and was named Most Improved last fall. Homa also plays lacrosse, is a peer tutor and plays the saxophone. He’s also the only Cape Elizabeth student taking the AP Physics Exam.

Twilight Baseball League tryouts Sunday

The 2010 Twilight Baseball League, which includes teams in Auburn, Biddeford and Portland, will hold tryouts Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Frozen Ropes Training Center in Portland. Players who turn 19 by Aug. 1 or who spent the 2009-10 academic year in college or prep school are eligible. There is a $10 tryout fee. FMI, 878-2600 or leaguelineup.com/twilightbaseballleague.

SailMaine benefit upcoming

The Shakedown Regatta, featuring sailboats racing on courses inside Portland Harbor, will be held Saturday, June 5 as a benefit for SailMaine’s community sailing program. FMI, sailmaine.org.

Scarborough Key Club 5K Sunday

The Scarborough Key Club is hosting a 5K road race called “Key to the Community” 5K Sunday. The race begins at the Scarborough High tennis courts at 1 p.m. The cost is $12 for pre-registration and $15 the day of the race. FMI, grffnsn@gmail.com or keytocommunity.webs.com.

Scarborough softball fundraiser at Pat’s Pizza

The Pat’s Pizza location in Scarborough will host a benefit evening for the Scarborough softball program on Tuesday. Ten to 15 percent of the proceeds for any business (excluding the bar) after 4:30 p.m., will go to the team. FMI, 883-8441.

Scarborough field hockey hosting camp

The reigning Class A state champion Scarborough field hockey program is hosting a high school level camp, July 19-23 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the high school’s turf field. The camp will be taught by coach Kerry Mariello and her staff, with special guests throughout the week. The cost is $175. There will also be camps for incoming grades 3-5 (July 26-29, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., $75) and grades 6-8 (July 26-30, 1-5 p.m., $100). FMI, 730-4150.
