In light of the current oil spill catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico, Sen. Olympia Snowe tours Portland Harbor, the second highest-volume oil port on the East Coast. Snowe, who is ranking member of the Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard, gets a briefing on Maine’s preparedness for an oil spill off its coast from Coast Guard Capt. Jim McPherson, commander of Sector Northern New England. He describes how lessons learned during an oil spill response exercise in Casco Bay in March are currently being applied to the response in the Gulf of Mexico. With them is Barbara Parker, director of the Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Response Services.
