Portland’s Akari salon was named first runner-up in Salon Today magazine’s Salons of the Year competition. The salon, located at 193 Middle St., recently went through a three-year-long renovation process.

“In the industry, this award is very, very respected,” said Alan Labos, the salon’s owner.

The winners, unveiled in the magazine’s June issue, were decided by a six-judge panel consisting of interior designers, salon owners and entrepreneurs.

Akari was bested by Bangz Salon and Wellness Spa in Montclair, N.J.

Labos told the magazine he also plans to open a 2,000-square-foot fitness center within the next six months. The salon also houses a bistro, boutique and spa.

“[It’s] huge,” said Labos. “It’s going to be good for Maine. It puts Akari in the national forefront.”
