BIDDEFORD — Volunteers gave Shevenell Park in Biddeford a new look today as part of the United Way of York County’s Day of Caring.

Heart of Biddeford, a nonprofit organization focused on revitalizing downtown Biddeford, bought plants, bistro-style tables and chairs with a $4,000 grant from the Maine Development Foundation.

The city’s public works department removed the old benches and shrubs to make way for the new landscaping. Volunteers said they hoped residents use the space to meet with others or to have lunch.

The park used to have people sleeping in it, broken bottles and drug activity, said Alan Ackerman, a volunteer and lifelong Biddeford resident. He hopes more projects like this one are done to revitalize downtown.
