BANGOR — A former Maine letter carrier who admitted stealing cash from cards and letters on his Orono route won’t be going to jail.

Fifty-six-year-old Lawrence A. Custis of Lincoln was sentenced in U.S. District Court in Bangor Thursday to three years probation.

In court, Custis apologized for betraying the trust of his family, his customers and the postal service.

Custis was also ordered to pay a fine of $2,150 and $430 in restitution.

Custis admitted taking money from the mail between December 2006 and April 2007.

The Bangor Daily News says Custis could have been sentenced to five years in prison.
