AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Maine election officials say a recount confirms the election night outcome of a close state Senate primary.

The Secretary of State’s office says the recount Thursday confirms Michael Estes’ win over Sarah Lewin in the state Senate District 1 Republican primary. Estes is from York and Lewin is from Eliot.

The result from the recount was 1,548 votes for Estes and 1,545 votes for Lewin.

Thursday’s recount was observed by both candidates and their legal counsel.

A recount is underway in Augusta in the Republican primary for Senate District 1, which covers the towns of Eliot, Kittery, Ogunquit, South Berwick and York.

Election night results gave Michael Estes a two-vote lead over Rep. Sally Lewin. The tallies were 1,546 for Estes and 1,544 for Lewin.

The count is expected to be completed this afternoon, according to the Secretary of State’s Office.

The winner will face Rep. Dawn Hill, D-York, in November. The seat is open this year because Sen. Peter Bowman, D-Kittery did not run for reelection.
