Weightman leads Phoenix to 3-1 victory over Knights

Nick Weightman scored two goals to lead the MPS Portland Phoenix (5-1-3) to a 3-1 Premier Development League win over the Brooklyn Knights (1-9-0) on Sunday at Deering High’s Memorial Field.

Gabriel Bagot gave Brooklyn a 1-0 lead 10 minutes in, but Portland scored twice to take a 2-1 lead into halftime.

The Phoenix then scored on a penalty kick with eight minutes left.

Michael Donald also scored for Portland. Goalkeeper Ryan Thomson had five saves.

BASEBALL

NECBL: Designated hitter Anthony Gomez hit a three-run homer and Matt Marra went 3 for 5 and drove in two runs to lead the Sanford Mainers to a 7-3 win over the Laconia Muskrats at Laconia, N.H.
Colin Snow pitched six innings to get the win. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits, striking out three and walking three.

TWILIGHT LEAGUE: Zach Lauzon and Phil Acin combined on a one-hitter for Dead River in a 2-0 win to split their doubleheader with host Aero Heating & Ventilating (5-5). Aero took the first game, 8-0.
In the opener, Matt Verrier and Kevin Chamberlain hit back-to-back home runs to fuel a six-run fourth inning.

Colby Averill had two singles, an RBI and a stolen base and scored a run to lead Patriot Insurance (2-7) to a 6-2 win and a doubleheader split at Westbrook.

Matt Foye had two hits for Lenders Network (6-3) in a 6-3 victory in the opener.
