AUGUSTA — Maine’s budget for the next fiscal year faces a budget hole of $85 million to $100 million.
Congress was poised to extend some stimulus funding to states through June 2011, but the measure died in the Senate earlier this month. Maine and other states that counted on the money must now make up the difference in their budgets.
The budget for fiscal 2011, which starts July 1, assumes the state will receive another $85 million in stimulus money. But Finance Commissioner Ryan Low said today the overall impact could be up to $100 million.
The administration of Gov. John Baldacci will begin a process of determining which programs and services it can unilaterally curtail.
