AUGUSTA — Maine energy officials say the current statewide average cash price for No. 2 heating oil is the same as it was last week, $2.63 per gallon.

The energy office says its latest survey shows the lowest heating oil price of $2.38 per gallon was found in the southwestern and western parts of the state, while the highest price of $2.80 per gallon was found in the eastern and northern regions.

Energy Director John Kerry said Monday that last week’s tropical storm in the Gulf of Mexico caused spikes in oil prices that have since subsided. Kerry says concerns that a strong hurricane season could further exacerbate the oil spill in the Gulf should prompt homeowners and businesses to evaluate their oil use and look for ways to reduce consumption.
