LISBON — A three-day celebration is under way paying homage to Maine’s official state beverage.

Some 40,000 visitors are expected in the town of Lisbon for the 27th annual Moxie Festival, which kicked off Friday and wraps up on Sunday.

The festival celebrates the quirky bittersweet soda that was concocted by a Mainer in the 1870s.

The event features a parade, a running race, a canoe race, a carnival, music, food and plenty of moxie memorabilia. There are also Moxie chugging and recipe contests.
