ISLAND FALLS — A Maine man is hospitalized in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the leg after he was hit by a bullet accidentally fired from a gun allegedly stolen from a vehicle.

Police say 26-year-old Jack Doughty of Bangor had burglarized the vehicles with two others early Friday when he lost control of a vehicle while fleeing the scene. They then fled on foot.

The Bangor Daily News says the gun Doughty was holding went off and hit him in the leg.

One of Doughty’s companions sought help, but the third fled.

Police say Doughty, 22-year-old William Campbell and 19-year-old Robert Russell, both of Island Falls, are all facing charges.
