Spring 2010 Male Athlete of the Year:

MARK MCCAULEY, Senior—Track

* Class B state champion, 800

* Class B state champion, mile

Coming off a dominant and award-winning indoor track campaign, Mark McCauley could have taken it easy in his final high school season. But if you expected him to relax, you don’t know what makes him tick.

McCauley made sure he capped his Rangers career in style with two more individual state titles as his consistency and ability to elevate his effort in the biggest meets put him alongside many previous Greely greats.

For going out in style, for always giving his best and for showing his teammates and the opposition how best to excel, Mark McCauley gets The Forecaster’s nod as Greely’s Spring 2010 Male Athlete of the Year.

McCauley, who grew up in Cumberland, entered high school thinking of himself as a sprinter. He didn’t even run cross country as a freshman and sophomore, but began running three seasons as a junior. This school year, he had the third-fastest time in the Class B cross country state meet, helping the Rangers repeat as champion. Indoors, McCauley won the 800 and the mile and was named Greely’s Winter Male Athlete of the Year.

The spring campaign was more of the same. McCauley did run second to NYA standout Henry Sterling early in the year, but by the time the championship meets rolled around, he had no peer. After skipping the Western Maine Conference meet, he didn’t miss a beat at states, taking the 800 in 1 minute, 57.20 and the mile in 4:18.60. At New Englands, McCauley stole the show by winning the 800, lowering his time by nearly five seconds from states (1:52.80).

McCauley was also a senior class officer and is an avid guitar player. He’ll attend Columbia University next year, where he’ll run indoor and outdoor track. He’s undecided on a major.

That’s the only thing uncertain about him. Mark McCauley, Greely’s Spring 2010 Male Athlete of the Year, has dazzled during his high school career and finished it in high style.

Coach John Folan’s comment: “Mark is extraordinarily bright and intuitive. He’s been terrific. He’s a leader who can talk the talk when he needs to to, but he also leads by example. He never has a bad day as far as his effort. The other kids aspire to be like him. He’s very talented and has a very good work ethic.”

Spring 2010 Female Athlete of the Year:

MARIKA STAYTE, Senior—Softball

* WMC All-Conference, first-team

* Class A/B West Senior All-Star

* Team captain

The Greely softball team wasn’t expected to be one of the best squads in Western B this spring, but the Rangers knew going in that they were something special. As the season progressed, Greely piled up victory after victory, thanks largely to a relentless offense that featured among others, senior Marika Stayte.

Stayte, a year-round player, led her team in runs batted in, was a threat every time she came to the plate and was pretty impressive defensively as well as the Rangers made a run to the semifinals.

For being devoted to her craft and for coming through time and again this season, Marika Stayte gets The Forecaster’s nod as Greely’s Spring 2010 Female Athlete of the Year.

Stayte is from North Yarmouth and started playing softball at a young age. She joined the Greely varsity team as a freshman and was a three-year starter.

This spring, Stayte had 32 hits in 69 at-bats, scored 23 runs, had four doubles, two triples and 27 RBI. She also stole 13 bases and led the team in hits, runs scored, RBI, average and on-base percentage.

Highlights included four RBI against Poland, five runs scored against Old Orchard Beach, three hits and five RBI versus Cape Elizabeth, two RBI against Falmouth, two hits and a pair of RBI against Fryeburg, two hits, two runs and two RBI versus York, three hits, three RBI and two runs against Yarmouth, three hits in a loss to Wells, three RBI and a triple in a second game versus Falmouth, two hits and two RBI against Traip, three hits (including a double and triple) with a run scored in a second win over Yarmouth and a run scored in a quarterfinal round playoff victory over Lincoln. Greely’s season ended in the next round at Maranacook.

Stayte was simply one of the toughest outs around and almost always came through with runners on. She was also a strong baserunner and in centerfield, patented a force play at second that aggravated the opposition.

Stayte played with the ASA U-18 Riptide team prior to this summer. She worked in the Therapy Dog program at Greely and also worked with middle school students. She will attend the University of New England next year where she’ll major In athletic training. She plans to tryout for the softball team.

They’d be wise to give her a serious look. There weren’t many bats more potent this year than that of Marika Stayte, Greely’s Spring 2010 Female Athlete of the Year.

Coach Mike Robb’s comment: “Marika had a tremendous season both at the plate and in the field. Marika is a student of the game and her maturity kept her in the present where she could identify, excel and take advantage of every opening in the defense. She improved each season in all aspects of her game. Her leadership was best portrayed by her work ethic, setting high standards by her example and helping her teammates during practice and games.”
