PULLING AGAINST MS

Employees from Time Warner Cable participated in the MS Society’s Annual Plane Pull on June 12 at the Portland International Jetport. Teams of 25 people pull are required to pull a Boeing 757 for 12 feet; the team with the fastest time wins. Time Warner Cable sponsored 5 of the 13 teams. The event raised nearly $20,000 for the MS Society’s Northern New England Chapter. The MS Society is dedicated to helping victims of Multiple Sclerosis.

 

POURING ON PASSPORT STAMPS

Oakhurst Dairy announced its sponsorship of the new Maine State Parks Passport Program. Participants can have their passports stamped at each state park and earn rewards as they accumulate stamps. FUNTOWN GIVES TO PANTRY

Funtown Splashtown USA supported the Saco Food Pantry last weekend by donating a portion of the entrance fees to the pantry. The Saco Food Pantry provides food to local Mainers in need.

 

RUTH’S GETS BOOST FROM PATRIOT

Patriot Insurance Company donated $3,000 to Ruth’s Reusable Resources of Portland, a nonprofit that helps provide school supplies to Maine classrooms. Patriot Insurance insures homes, cars and businesses throughout Maine.

BANK BACKS HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Saco & Biddeford Savings Institution donated $5,000 of the $25,000 that the bank has pledged to the South Portland Historical Society. The money will go to fund the creation of the historical society’s new museum at Bug Light Park. The museum is now open and free of charge.

RAISING FUNDS FOR SPILL AWARENESS

Repower Maine and the Constellation Gallery hosted a fundraiser in Portland on June 25, to raise awareness for the Gulf Oil Spill. The event raised over $500 that will be donated to the Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund. Shipyard sponsored the event. Repower will be at the Farmers Market in Portland on Wednesdays and Saturdays collecting donations for the Gulf Oil Spill. Repower Maine promotes the use of clean energy throughout Maine.

 

SMILING ON UNE DENTAL SCHOOL

Gorham Savings Bank donated $25,000 to the University of New England’s new dental school located on their Portland campus. The bank’s donation will go directly to construction costs. The college of Dental Medicine will be Maine’s first dental school.

 

PIERCE ATWOOD PITCHES IN

Pierce Atwood LLP celebrated its Day of Community Service last Tuesday by sending volunteers to the Crossroads for Women’s Residential/Rehabilitation and the Children and Mothers Program located in Windham. Over forty lawyers and staff participated in the event. Crossroads for Women provides treatment for women with substance abuse and mental health problems.

FIGHTING PARKINSON’S IN SANFORD

Sanford Institution for Savings sponsored its Annual Motorcycle Run for Parkinson’s Disease in Sanford last Monday. Twenty-five bikers participated in the event, which raised $2,350.

Over one hundred spectators came out to support the cause.

 

GORHAM SAVINGS BOOSTS USM

Gorham Savings Bank donated $20,000 to the USM Presidential Scholarship. The scholarship provides Maine high school graduates $5,000 per year for four years. This is the fifth time the bank has donated to the Presidential Scholarship.
