CUMBERLAND — The state medical examiner’s office Tuesday said a 3 Meadow Way man died last week when he sustained a cervical spine fracture and drowned.

The office performed an autopsy on 40-year-old Kermit Schott on July 7, a day after he was found unresponsive in his above-ground pool by his wife, Melinda.

The accident was reported at 10:23 p.m. on July 6. Fire Chief Dan Small said on Tuesday that Schott’s wife removed her husband from the pool and started CPR when police Officer Antonio Ridge arrived on the scene and took over.

Two paramedics also tried unsuccessfully to revive Schott, Small said.

Schott was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was declared dead shortly after 11 p.m.
