A man was airlifted from the Knife Edge on Mt. Katahdin Thursday afternoon after he fell 10 to 12 feet on the exposed, rocky ridgeline.
Dan Frye sustained head and torso injuries, according to Baxter State Park officials. He had been hiking with a news team from WLBZ TV in Bangor, which was on assignment from the station.
One of the team members used a cell phone to call for help after Frye fell.
Park rangers headed to the scene and requested assistance from the 126th Army National Guard Medivac Unit in Bangor. A Blackhawk Medivac helicopter arrived on the Knife Edge at approximately 2:30 p.m., and evacuated Frye to Millinocket Regional Hospital. His conditions was not immediately known.
Park Director Jensen Bissell said the WLBZ party was fortunate that the weather was perfect and that the 126th Medivac crew was available and prepared to fly the mission. Bad weather would have resulted in a multi-day rescue operation involving more than 40 people, he said.
