South Portland American routs Auburn to repeat as Little League state champion

Taylor Whaley struck out 10 in four innings, and drove in four runs with a double and a triple as South Portland American successfully defended its Little League softball state championship with a 10-0 win over Auburn at Biddeford.

The game was stopped after four innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Paige Carter went 3 for 3 for South Portland, which advances to the Eastern Regional in Albany, N.Y., starting July 31.

WORLD CUP: Jennie Finch hit a two-run homer in her first at-bat after announcing she’ll retire, leading the United States to a 9-0 victory against Canada in the opening game of the World Cup of Softball at Oklahoma City.

BASEBALL

NECBL: Kevin Kilpatrick pitched a five-hitter and Brandon Boudreaux drove in three runs to lead the Danbury Westerners to a 5-1 win over the Sanford Mainers at Danbury, Conn.

Bobby Doyon was 3 for 3 with a home run for Sanford.

HOCKEY

U.S. HALL OF FAME: Jeremy Roenick and brothers Kevin and Derian Hatcher were selected for induction into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame.

This year’s class will be inducted on Oct. 21 in Buffalo, N.Y.
