Red Claws’ Almond signs with Italian team after playing with Spain’s Real Madrid

Maine Red Claws guard Morris Almond signed with Scavolini Pesaro of the Italian League on Tuesday.

Almond averaged 22.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists for the Red Claws after he was acquired in a Feb. 15 trade with Springfield.

The Red Claws retain his NBA Development League rights should he return to the U.S. next winter.

Almond had signed with Real Madrid in Spain following the Red Claws’ season. He averaged 3.7 points in seven games there.

WNBA: Sancho Lyttle had 20 points and 14 rebounds and Iziane Castro Marques scored 23 points to help the Atlanta Dream beat the Tulsa Shock 105-89 at Tulsa, Okla.

Tamika Catchings had 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Indiana to a 78-74 win over Chicago at Indianapolis.

Rookie Kalana Greene scored a season-high 17 points, Plenette Pierson had 16 and New York Liberty beat the visiting San Antonio Silver Stars, 77-72.

Asjha Jones scored 10 of her 23 points in the fourth period and Connecticut snapped a two-game losing streak with an 88-78 win over visiting Washington.

RUNNING

BAREFOOT RUNNING CLINIC: Michael Sandler, author of “Barefoot Running: How to Run Light and Free by Getting in Touch with the Earth,” will hold a free clinic at 7:30 p.m. today at Back Cove in Portland, covering topics such as how barefoot running can help you run faster, lighter and more injury-free.

Sandler’s book is designed to teach people how to run and walk with less impact on the body. It also teaches people the best techniques for barefoot running, starter’s tips, different tools for kids and senior citizens, and running on different types of land surfaces.

BASEBALL

NECBL: Doug Elliot broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run double in the fifth inning as Sanford defeated North Shore 5-1 at Lynn, Mass.

Michael Augliera held North Shore (22-16) to six hits in six innings for the Mainers (22-17). Mike McCann and Matt Marra each went 2 for 4 with an RBI.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR: Team owner Jack Roush was in serious but stable condition after walking away from a plane crash in Wisconsin.

Roush Fenway President Geoff Smith confirmed that the plane belonged to Roush, who was flying it. Smith said Roush’s injuries include facial lacerations.

SOCCER

MARADONA DONE: Diego Maradona was removed as coach of Argentina’s national team, ending an erratic 21-month stint at the helm.

The Argentine Football Association announced Maradona’s contract would not be renewed after he had said he would only accept the AFA’s offer of a new four-year deal through the 2014 World Cup if his entire staff also remained.

TENNIS

FARMERS CLASSIC: James Blake rolled to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Leonardo Mayer in a first-round match at Los Angeles.

Robby Ginepri beat Ilija Bozoljack 6-3, 6-4, and Ryan Sweeting outlasted Kristof Vliegen, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

BANK OF THE WEST CLASSIC: Defending champion Marion Bartoli advanced with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ashley Harkleroad at Stanford, Calif.

HORSE RACING

BELMONT WINNER INJURED: Belmont Stakes winner Drosselmeyer is recovering from an ankle injury that has sidelined the 3-year-old colt for the rest of the year.
