South Portland American starts regional with 9-1 victory against Westerly, R.I.

South Portland American opened pool play Saturday with a 9-1 win against Westerly, R.I., in the Little League Softball East Regional for 11- and 12-year-olds in Albany, N.Y.

Winning pitcher Taylor Whaley allowed three hits, struck out 12 and walked one.

Michelle Moreau hit a two-run single for the Maine champs, making their second straight appearance in the regional. Kiley Kennedy and Laurine German added run-producing singles.

South Portland plays Vermont at 11 a.m. today.

BASEBALL

NECBL: Tom Rombilus was 2 for 5 with three RBI and pitched 52/3 innings of four-hit relief for the win as the Laconia Muskrats rallied for a 9-6 win over the Sanford Mainers at Goodall Park.

Anthony Gomez hit a two-run single to help Sanford (23-19) take a 6-1 lead in the second inning.

JUNIOR LEGION: The top-seeded Windham Merchants and second-seeded Lewiston will meet in today’s 2 p.m. winners’ bracket game after posting 3-1 victories in the state championships at The Ballpark in Old Orchard Beach.

Josh Delong’s two-run homer broke a 1-1 tie as Lewiston (19-2) beat Seacoast Law & Title (17-6). Seacoast, the No. 3 seed, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Tucker Beaudoin doubled and scored on Nate Berube’s single to tie it in the fifth.

Cody Dube pitched a six-hitter with seven strikeouts for Windham (20-1) in its win over fourth-seeded OA-Yarmouth (14-9). Dube scored on Robbie Hamilton’s single to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning. Windham added two runs in the fifth when Riley Williamson scored on Shawn Francoeur’s groundout and Dube scored on a Hamilton single.

Seacoast Law & Title stayed alive in the double-elimination tournament with a 12-0 victory over Yarmouth in five innings. Keenan Lowe had four RBI, including a three-run homer that highlighted an eight-run second inning, and Derek Bouchard drove in three runs.

The loser of today’s Windham Merchants-Lewiston game meets Seacoast in a 5 p.m. elimination game.
