PORTLAND — Margaret Theresa “Maggie” Wallace, 83, died Aug. 7 at St. Joseph’s Manor.

Born in Portland, a daughter of Francis and Helen McGahey McFarland, she attended St. Dominic’s Grammar School and St. Joseph’s Academy, and  graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing.

For many years she worked at Mercy Hospital, and later, for Dr. Charles Skillin.

She was a volunteer worker at McAuley’s Good Cause Thrift Shop and she looked forward to going to the “boutique,” where she enjoyed seeing her co-workers and customers.

A devout Catholic, she was a longtime communicant of Sacred Heart Church, where she served as a Eucharistic minister.

She was predeceased by two brothers, and Edward J. “Packy” McFarland, and Rev. Francis L. McFarland C.S.C.

Survivors include her beloved husband of 61 years, John P. Wallace, Sr. of Portland; two daughters, Patricia Frances Wallace of Portland, Nancy Helen Wallace of Portland; a son John P. Wallace, Jr. and his wife Linda of Scarborough; a sister, Helen Mary Polito of Portland; four granddaughters, Meghan M. Wallace and her fiancé Andrew Langella, Ashley M. Wallace, Rachel A. Wallace and Mary Elizabeth Wallace; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family would like to thank the staff at St. Joseph’s Manor for their loving care and support over the past year, and also the staff of VNA & Hospice.

Visiting hours will be held 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland. Prayers will be recited at 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Sacred Heart/St. Dominic’s Church, Mellon Street, Portland.
