PORTLAND — The World, a high-end luxury cruise ship, will visit Portland in October 2012, the city announced today. It will be the ship’s first call to port since 2005 and it will berth at the soon-to-be constructed deep-water pier at Ocean Gateway.

The ship includes 165 units from apartments to studios. It cruises around the world, providing a unique vacation home for several hundred people hailing from more than 40 countries.

The World is operated by ResidenSea and is scheduled to travel north from Australia to Southeast Asia and India, passing through the Suez Canal to the Mediterranean Sea and around the western coast of Europe to Greenland and then south along the coast of North and South America, ending with an expedition to Antarctica. The ship is currently berthed in the Port of Cobh on the southern coast of Ireland.

A record setting 73 ships carrying 75,731 passengers are scheduled to dock in Portland this season. To date, 37 ships with nearly 50,000 passengers are booked for the 2011 cruise ship season, including the Cunard ship, Queen Elizabeth, and ships for the 2012 season are already being booked.

Correction: Aug. 11, 2010: This article has been revised to reflect the following correction: The World cruise ship is scheduled to make its second call to the Port of Portland, not its first, in 2012. Incorrect information was supplied to the newspaper.
